The German Language
My heritage is German, Czech and African-American and I was born in Kempten, Germany but raised in the beautiful city of Augsburg in the Bavaria. I have lived in Germany for more than a decade and was privileged to grow up speaking with my mother and grandmother, as well as visiting family and friends throughout Germany. My loving affinity for foreign languages since childhood has open the gates to traveling to 25 countries and conversing in various languages. In college I was a foreign language major namely German, French, Spanish and Linguistics. I find modern Greek to possess a very beautiful melodic sound.
As an adult living in Germany, I had the dream profession of an International Patient Liaison at the HerzundKreislaufzentrum Medical Center in Rothenburg an den Fulda, a famous heart center in Hessen. Here I connected with patients from the Middle East, Russia, Ukraine and Canada as well as translating German documents, e.g. patient education literature into English. My other gifts included interpreting for English speaking patients and creating my own German-English course for the staff in various departments. My forté is not translating from English into German.
In the United States I worked for a private interpreting firm performing duties via telephone. My clients were primarily physicians and patients on a global level.
Since I grew up speaking Bavarian German, it is the language with which I AM most comfortable, but obviously I can speak the standard German sometimes with a "Schwäbische" or Bavarian accent. I also understand the language spoken by the Amish.
Medicine and spirituality are my specialty, i.e. from German into English. Legal, government, economic and other texts are not my forté and I choose not to venture into these areas. My heart's desire is to translate a book which is a perfect mélange of western and holistic medicine with spirituality. I AM open to offering sessions in German and also presentations as well as workshops in areas of my expertise. I will intuitively feel each opportunity to see if it is right for me.
