KEEPING OUR PETS SAFE DURING  an EMERGENCY

  1. Always have a contact person such as a neighbor, landlord, family member or friend to be available for the safety and care of your pet, in case of emergencies.

  2. Place a sticker on a window in the front of your home or at the front entrance stating that there is a “pet(s) inside this home”.

  3. Always keep the pet carriers easily accessible.  Make certain that their door and locks work properly.  Keep a warm blanket or cover along with a tee shirt or clothing with your scent inside.

  4. Animals are highly intuitive and sensitive to sound, at the first sign of danger they will find a place to hide, which is low on the ground and away from the sounds. In an attempt to place them in the carrier and leave the danger area or your home, please do not pull them by the neck.  This is the area of the throat “chakra” or energy center and in honoring and healing this area, it helps to prevent negative energy from affecting the body, mind and soul. They are also encouraged to speak their truth. I was also told that only the animal mother can carry an infant this way.

  5. A blanket can also be used as a cover to shield your pet from the cold and visible excitement of all the outside activity. The second blanket inside the carrier helps them feel warm, snugly and safe.

  6. Secure their collar and leash around them before they go into the carrier.  It is a wonderful safety measure, just in case they “escape”.

  7. As you transport your pet, continuously communicate with them saying;   "I love you”,  “ You are safe” and “Mommy/Daddy is here”.  If you do not have a carrier or your pet is too large, try massaging the base of the tail.  This is the location of the root chakra and helps them feel safe and grounded.

  8. Try to stay clear of areas where people are expressing their fears and there is a lot of expression of verbal and physical activity or noise.

  9. Once you have returned to your home or a safe place inside, the animals usually become very quiet.  Hold them and give them lots’ of hugs and kisses.  Playing with them and their favorite toys, as well as giving a treat helps your pet to concentrate on something light and fun.  Allow your intuition to guide you as to the perfect time to do this.

  10. As the day or evening progresses, your pet may also yearn for your physical touch such as sleeping next to you, cuddling in your lap or in a warm, quiet and cozy part of the house.

  11. The flower essences by Spirit in Nature,  i.e. Pear their rescue remedy or the Bach homeopathic drops such as Rescue Remedy for pets, truly facilitate healing the emotions during these traumatic experiences. You can give this for about one week and then begin with the Grape, which represents Love. As always use your intuitive guidance. You can also use the flower essences at the beginning of the “danger” and while they are in the carrier.
